Children Immunity Workshop at Polliwogs on 15th May '15

Very nice to arrange a playdate at Polliwogs with Shaws preschool mummies and their children.

While the kids had fun playing at the indoor playground, the mummies keep themselves updated on how they can help to boost their kids immunity through the nutritional immunology way.

Very nice poster done by our team mates :)

Gout sufferers can eat soy: NUS study

SINGAPORE - Soy products do not increase the risk of gout, and people who already have the condition can eat them, a new local study has found.

This goes against the common belief that gout sufferers should avoid eating soy and legume products as they are high in the organic compound purine.

Although purine-rich foods like shellfish and meat are known to cause higher levels of uric acid in one's blood, which may be retained, soy does not appear to have the same effect. Other purine-rich foods may cause sodium urate crystals forming in the joints, causing aches and pains, said researchers from the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and the National University Hospital, who did the study.

This myth is so common that even health professionals believe it, they said.

But their study - involving more than 50,000 Chinese in Singapore - found that those who consumed the most soy products were at lower risk of gout than those who ate the least.

The interviewees were 45 to 74 years old when they were recruited from 1993 to 1998. Researchers asked about their dietary habits then, and followed up with with questions on their medical status from 1999 to 2004 and 2006 to 2010. Out of the 51,114 they followed up on, 2,197 had developed the condition.

"Based on our study, soy might in fact have a protective effect against gout but this needs to be further studied," said Dr Teng Gim Gee, senior consultant at the division of rheumatology at the National University Hospital.

The finding, that soy is not associated with higher risk of gout, confirms six other studies done in places like Japan and Taiwan, which show that consuming soy does not increase uric acid in one's blood, said Professor Koh Woon-Puay, who studies population health at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.

The local study is the first to draw a direct link between gout and soy. Also, increased uric acid, though a necessary condition, may not be sufficient for causing gout. Other factors like genes play a part too.

Scientists have yet to confirm why soy, though high in purine, is not associated with higher uric acid retention. But they suspect, based on a study in Japan, that soy may increase uric acid excretion and thus play no role in increasing the risk of gout.

In the local study, the group which ate the most red meat had an 8 per cent higher risk of gout. Surprisingly, the group which consumed the most poultry had a significantly higher 27 per cent increased risk.

Up to 97 per cent of the red meat consumed by those polled was pork as older Chinese seldom eat beef and lamb, unlike in Western countries.

The trend has to be studied further as previous research did not break meat up into different categories to look at their associations with gout, Prof Koh said.

"Though the study surveyed only Chinese, we have no reason to expect different results in other racial groups," she added.

About 4 per cent of Singaporeans over the age of 45 suffer from gout, which is more common in males.

Soy is an excellent alternative choice of protein from plant food besides animal proteins (eggs, meat, cow's milk). It's cholestrol free, high in dietary fibre, rich in vitamins and minerals. Soy also contains plant nutrients called Isoflavones which helps to promote good health of our heart.

Children Immunity Workshop at Cool De Sac on 22nd April '15

This is our first collobration with an indoor playground - Cool De Sac to held our Children Immunity Workshop. A lot of hard work has been put in by CDS to have the lovely posters done up and announcements to invite parents who bought their kids to the playground for some fun to keep them posted on the Children Immunity Workshop that is holding in one of their party room.

It was until then I came to know that they do provide "nanny" service whereby they have facilitator at each station to help look after the kids so that the parents can relax and have some food.
Lovely poster done up by CDS. I love that !
You may be thinking its just another indoor playground, well you are partially correct because besides just play, half of the premises are into exploring the child's creation.

They have a blocks corner to develop their creativity and boost self-confidence. Arts, Tree House for the active kids, a dress up corners where kids were transform into Super Hero instantly.

How about Tweens? There's an interactive console games for older kids. So there's something for everyone.

Oh talking so much about the playground, I have forgotten to take photos of the playground !

Ok back to my workshop, it was a very awesome afternoon spent at CDS where we have a wonderful time interacting from the audience.

We have parents from all walks of life as famous daddy blogger, media, parenting groups.

A lot of questions were thrown in and we are very glad that everyone benefitted greatly from the sharing session.

A sign for the participants on where's the workshop to be held.

3 simple steps to read food labels the right way

How can we be a smart consumer? Start by learning how to read the food labels in 3 simple ways.

1. Look for the manufacturer and distributor if they are of the same company.

Choosing a product that is manufactured and distributed by the same company ensures the accountability of the company; steers in the direction towards safe and quality products.

Example: A product is manufactured by ABC company and distributed by DEF company; if you have any query or issues, which company do we look for?

2. Look out for the ingredients

The importance of choosing the right nutrients can nourish and step up our immune system. Hence it is crucial to ensure that the ingredients listed are wholesome over synthetic / man-made vitamins & minerals. The sequential of the ingredients listed also indicates the proportion of the ingredients that goes into the making.

How do we know what's wholesome and what is not?
Let's look at a simple analogy

Which part of the car do you think is the most important? Is it the engine, tyre or steering wheel?
In fact, every part of the car is very important. We cannot simply drive the car with just a steering wheel or an engine.

So let's apply the analogy back to the example.

The top label with wholesome ingredients which is naturally rich in folate and other nutrients; like broccoli, asparagus, carrot which is considered as a whole car.

The bottom label with synthetic supplements like Vitamin C with Ascorbic Acid which is in its supplemental form. Do you even consider them as a whole car?

So which label would you choose?

3. Barcode

Barcode is the identity of the product which bears their manufacturing details and stringent tests that it has gone through.

So now you know how to read the labels the right way in 3 easy steps, let's be a wiser consumer from today and start to look for wholesome food to nourish your body with the right nutrients.

Class shutdown a day for sanitization work due to HFMD on 23-Jan'15

It's been a week since the HFMD notice was made known to the parents and the reported cases had gone up to 4. There was many suspected cases everyday and students who were on the brink of body temperature 37.5deg were monitor throughout the class, flu, runny nose, cough etc were asked to go home and rest.

Sher, were spotted with 2 spots on her tongue on 19-Jan'15 morning and after a discussion with her teacher, we decided to keep her at home for a day for observations. The teacher wanted me to get a letter of clearance from the doctor.

To be frank, I was really thinking of going to see the doctor to get the clearance letter as a proof that Missy do not have HFMD. But I stand firmed on my believe in the science to boost her immunity during this crucial period in her school. I recalled that Cactus has very high anti-inflammatory & anti-oxidant properties, so I get her 2 sachets of Millennium beverage. As amazing as you can see below, the 2 red spots were gone the next day and she's well received in school again.

Unfortunately on 22-Jan'15, a student from the afternoon session came in with full blown HFMD symptom (fever, blisters on hand), the teachers immediately asked the parent to send the student home and the whole class had to be dismissed.

Hence, I received a call from Sher's teacher that the class had to be shutdown for sanitization purposes tomorrow. We also received news that there are many new cases of HFMD in our school sea as reported by one doctor. One of the classmate's Daddy also succumbed to the disease.

We truly believe we can fight this dreadful HFMD together and bring the school back to normal again.

HFMD is a viral infection and there is no medication. It depends very much on our immune systems to recover from the illnesses.

If you would like to know more on how to defend your little ones from the common diseases, do free free to contact me at 9843-4599 for a non-obligatory discussion.

What is Nutritional Immunology?

Nutritional Immunology or immunonutrition, is the science that studies the link between the food we eat and our immune system.

Everyone of us are born with the best doctor in the world - our immune system. By nourishing our body with the essential nutrients, we can have a healthy immune system, thereby can prevent or combat diseases like cancer, diabetes, influenza and live longer.

Such foods can help us recover faster without the use of medications when we fall ill.
Our body will also be able to perform the functions of defence, cleanse & repair more effectively.

Nutritional Immunology advocates on prevention is better than cure and focus on strengthening the immune system by consuming wholesome plant based food which is rich in Antioxidants, Phytochemicals & Polysaccharides to protect our body from the harmful effects of the free radicals, unhealthy lifestyle and diets in everyday life.
What are all these nutrients and why are they so important to us?

Antioxidants are compounds that can prevent body cell damages through oxidation and slow down aging and also anti-inflammatory agents to reduce the severity of arthritis and bronchitis.

Phytochemicals gives fruits and vegetables their colour, flavour and aroma. Phytochemicals protect these plants from sunlight and to ensure their survival, processes enormous healing properties to nourish and boost the immune system.

Polysaccharides are long chains of sugars found commonly in mushrooms, increases natural killer  (NK) cells activities by 38 to 49 times, which prevents healthy cells or benign tumours from becoming malignant.

Nutritional Immunology not only supports taking the plant food in their wholesome form, but also how the processes of plant foods like the plant species and parts, harvesting time and processing procedures, plant parts to retain its optimum quality and quantity of antioxidants, phytochemicals and polysaccharides.
Examples: ginseng berry has 4 times more immunity supporting ginsenosides as compared to the roots which we are more familiar with? Banana has more nutritious value when they are ripen on the trees rather than we picked them while they are green and get transported to our table? Grape seeds which we always discard has OPC (oligomeric procyanidins) is effective against heart and retinal diseases.

Thanks to Nutritional Immunology, we now have a better understanding of proper nourishing through plant foods, prolonging the length and quality of lives is not impossible but achievable!
